Mogak Waterfall
Description
Mogak Waterfall is a cascading waterfall on the Mogak River in the Abzelilovsky District of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, in the south-east of the republic near the village of Salavatovo. A mountain stream runs down from the Kryktytau Ridge over heaps of boulders and forms a chain of cascades, or steps, with a total height of more than 20 metres.
How the waterfall looks depends heavily on the season. During the spring flood the Mogak overflows, and the small waterfall turns into a powerful mountain torrent. As with other mountain waterfalls in Bashkortostan, the best time to visit is late April and May. In summer the Mogak runs low and becomes a barely noticeable trickle between huge rocks.
Getting there
The nearest city to start from is Magnitogorsk: about 30 km on a paved road to the small village of Salavatovo, through Tashtimirovo and Abzelilovo. The village is on every map and navigator, and the exact spot of the waterfall can be found by the coordinates on this page.
In Salavatovo keep to the left: the road crosses a small stream. Beyond the village a dirt road begins, or rather several dirt roads, for about another 4 km. The dirt road ends at a ford across the Mogak River. Unless you drive an off-road vehicle, it is better to leave the car on the bank and walk about 1 km to the waterfall.
