Lyazhgi Tower Complex
Description
The Lyazhgi tower complex (Башенный комплекс Ляжги) is a family castle-type complex in the Jeyrakh gorge of the Republic of Ingushetia, in Jeyrakhsky District. It stands on the right bank of the Armkhi River, on a steep mountain slope, in a small hollow east of the former settlement of Meleri. It is one of the fortified family settlements, with residential and battle towers, typical of the whole Armkhi gorge.
History
In the past, five large castle complexes stood in the Lyazhgi settlement, and each clan had its own battle tower — such towers served both as a dwelling and as a stronghold in case of a raid. From the south, the settlement was protected by a tall stone defensive wall, which dates to the late medieval period and can still be traced on the ground today, marking the former boundary of the fortified settlement.
Legends
The name "Lyazhgi" is linked to the word "lyazhg," a leather sack used for storing grain. According to legend, the harvests here were so abundant that a special container for grain was needed, and this gave the settlement its name. It is also said that copper ore was long mined in the area around Lyazhgi, from which the local people made various goods and traded with neighboring communities of the gorge, which points to the once prosperous life of the clans who settled here.
What survives today
Of the five former castle complexes, only two battle towers have survived at full height; the rest collapsed over time and remain only partly, or as foundations. The Khutiev tower is notable for its four-sided stone false vault, built on the second, third, and sixth floors — a detail considered characteristic of Ingush tower architecture. The Kharsiev tower was restored between 2006 and 2010 and now best shows what the family fortress of this settlement once looked like.
Getting there
The complex lies in Jeyrakhsky District of Ingushetia, near the Armkhi River and the former settlement of Meleri. It can be reached by car along the mountain roads of the Jeyrakh gorge, through the district's settlements; the road follows the Armkhi River. As with other tower complexes of the gorge, it is more convenient to reach Lyazhgi during daylight hours, since the mountain roads here are narrow and landmarks are scarce.
