Taban-Khurgan
Description
Taban-Khurgan, or Five Fingers in Buryat, is a rock outcrop in the Tugnuy valley of the Mukhorshibirsky district, Republic of Buryatia, not far from the villages of Galtai and Narsatuy. The outcrop, about 146 meters high, resembles a human hand with fingers raised and slightly clenched. Tectonic processes, together with centuries of wind and water erosion, shaped this unusual form.
History
Taban-Khurgan has long been a sacred site, not only for the Buryats, but also for the Merkits and the Xiongnu, peoples who lived in this territory earlier. The Buryats worshipped the outcrop until 1930, when religious rites in the area were suppressed. The tradition revived decades later: in 2006, members of the Tengeri shamanic religious organization resumed ceremonies honoring the spirits of ancestors here.
Legends
Several legends surround the outcrop. According to one, the Merkits, who lived in the Tugnuy valley before the Mongols arrived, performed sacrificial rites at Taban-Khurgan, praying to heaven for forgiveness. According to another, Genghis Khan himself left the imprint of his right hand here, a mark in stone shaped like five fingers, which gave the outcrop the name it carries today.
What You'll Find There Today
Taban-Khurgan is considered one of the most powerful places for honoring ancestral spirits in the Tugnuy valley. Pilgrims and visitors leave coins in the stone "palm" and tie khadags, ceremonial silk scarves, along with ordinary ribbons to the rock, wishing for happiness and good fortune. For residents of the Mukhorshibirsky district, the outcrop remains more than a natural landmark: it is still an active place of worship today.
How to Get There
To reach Taban-Khurgan from Ulan-Ude, turn left (east) off the federal highway toward the ulus of Khoshun-Uzur, then continue along local roads to the outcrop. Another route approaches from the village of Narsatuy, near which Taban-Khurgan stands. Both routes pass through the Tugnuy valley of the Mukhorshibirsky district, where the outcrop is located.
