Description

The Akhunovsky geological section (Ахуновский геологический разрез) is a natural rock exposure in the Salavatsky district of Bashkortostan, on the right slope of a river valley between the village of Akhunovo and the village of Mechetlino. It lies about a kilometer west of Akhunovo, by the R242 highway that connects the two settlements.

What it is

The exposure cuts through Permian-system beds belonging to the Yangantau suite of the Artinskian stage. The rock is limestone with a noticeable content of organic matter. Within the layers you can see folded and tilted beds — traces of ancient submarine landslides: still-unconsolidated sediment slid down the sea-floor slope and crumpled into folds before hardening into its present shape. From the road the fold structure itself reads clearly: the layers are bent and broken, not lying in the flat, even strata of an ordinary quarry section.

Among the layers there are dark patches of scorched rock, sometimes called burned-rock hearths. They formed because the limestone contains bituminous substances: under certain conditions such interbeds can spontaneously combust, leaving characteristic dark and rust-colored patches on the rock face, resembling the traces of a campfire.

Getting there

The rock face is exposed right next to the R242 highway, on the stretch between the village of Akhunovo and the village of Mechetlino, about a kilometer west of Akhunovo. The layered wall rises on the right side of the river valley (heading that direction) and is clearly visible straight from the road — you can stop and examine the section without walking far from the roadside. The nearest larger villages are Akhunovo and Mechetlino, with the village of Kusepeyevo lying a bit further along the same valley.

Good to know

The section is listed among the geological sites of the Yangantau natural park, the same part of Bashkortostan known for the Yangantau balneological resort and its natural vents of hot steam from the mountain of the same name. About 9 km from the section lies another geological landmark of the area, the Kurgazak mineral spring.

Approach the base of the outcrop with care: the rock crumbles in places, and loose scree collects at the foot of the slope.
