Description

Mindyak Mine is an abandoned gold-mining complex near the village of Mindyak in the Uchalinsky District of Bashkortostan, about 75 km from Uchaly. The ruins of the ore-processing plant and other surface buildings of the mine still stand above ground, and some of them have unfinished mine shafts visible inside.

History

The gold deposit on the eastern slope of Mount Blagodatnaya was discovered in 1933 by mining engineer P. E. Kudrin, who was carrying out geological survey work in the area. The find proved rich, and construction of the Mindyak workers' settlement began already in 1934, together with open-pit mining of the Blagodatnoye deposit.

Production expanded quickly, and in 1936 construction of an ore-processing plant began to handle the extracted ore. The plant was commissioned in 1938 and remained the settlement's main industrial facility for decades. From 1961 the mine switched from open-pit to underground operations, as the pits were exhausted and gold was mined through shafts instead. Underground mining continued until 1996, when the enterprise was declared unprofitable and shut down.

Legends

A local legend links the name "Mindyak" to French origin. According to one version, it means "golden pit" or "gold-bearing pit". The story goes that the mines once belonged to a Frenchman who was proud of his beautiful daughter named Michelle, and that her name eventually turned into the name of the place. There is no documentary evidence for this story, but it is well known among local residents and passed down from generation to generation.

What remains today

The ruins of the ore-processing plant still stand on the former mine's grounds — brick buildings with remains of equipment and a headframe tower above one of the shafts. Unfinished mine shafts descending underground can be seen inside some of the buildings. Many of the surrounding open pits and underground workings are now flooded with groundwater and pose a hazard to visitors.

Separate from the main complex, on the bank of the Kalkan River, stands another abandoned industrial building — an old steam mill. In the village of Mindyak itself, a monument has been erected in memory of the gold miners who worked at the mine.

Getting there

Mindyak Mine lies next to the village of Mindyak in the Uchalinsky District of Bashkortostan, about 75 km from the district center, the town of Uchaly. The nearest railway station is Ural-Tau, roughly 27 km from the mine.
