Description

Ritsa (Big Ritsa) is a mountain lake of glacial-tectonic origin, located in the Western Caucasus, Abkhazia, in the Gudauta district of the partially recognized Republic of Abkhazia. According to the administrative division of Georgia, it is located in the Gudauta municipality of the Abkhaz Autonomous Republic. It is the largest lake in Abkhazia.

Geography

Lake Ritsa is located at an altitude of 950 m above sea level in the Bzyp River basin, in a deep wooded gorge of the Lashipse and Yupshara rivers, to the east of the Gagra Range. The mountains surrounding the lake have an altitude of 2200-3200 meters. The area of the lake is 1.5 km², its length is 2.5 km, the width is from 270 to 870 meters. The average depth of the lake is 63 m, the greatest depth is 116 m. The lake is fed by rain and snow water, seasonal fluctuations in water level are 2-3 m. The average water temperature on the surface of the lake is above 10 °C from late June to October, and the highest is 17.6 °C in August. In winter, the average water temperature is +3.8 °C.

Ritsa freezes in very severe winters, when almost its entire surface is covered with a layer of ice 1-5 cm thick. In snowy winters, the snow cover in the Ritsa area reaches 7-11 m, usually it does not exceed 2-3 m. The color of the water surface changes depending on the time of year due to the varying degrees of transparency of the waters of the rivers flowing into it and the development of microscopic algae - phytoplankton. In spring and summer, the water is green-yellow, in autumn and winter - blue-blue.

The Yupshara River flows out of Lake Ritsa and flows into the Gega River, which in turn flows into the Bzyb River. The lake was formed approximately 250 years ago as a result of the collapse of part of Mount Pshegishhva into the Lashipse River.

The lake is home to trout, and whitefish and chub have been acclimatized. Nearby is Lake Malaya Ritsa, with an area of 0.2 km².

Tourism

Lake Ritsa is one of the main tourist attractions in Abkhazia due to its picturesqueness. On the shore of the lake are the dachas of Stalin and Khrushchev, where historical furniture and interior items have been preserved, and excursions are conducted. The lake and the surrounding areas are part of the Ritsa Relic National Park.

On the eastern shore of the lake, in a beech grove, there is a tourist parking lot with places for tents. There is a pebble beach with a fenced-off area for swimming, where the water is usually 1-3 degrees warmer. From the Black Sea coast to the lake there is a road through the valleys of the Bzyb, Yupshara and Gega rivers, which then rises to the climatic resort of Auadhara. Lake Ritsa is also a place for tasting the rarest varieties of honey. Tourists often choose chestnut, eucalyptus, May and meadow honey, each of which has its own healing properties.
