Underground Geyser (Kirovsk)
Description
One of the most unusual sights in northern Russia, where you can see the so-called "Underground Geyser". Despite its name, this is not a genuine geyser in the geological sense, but a self-flowing artesian borehole drilled back in the 20th century. Over time it became a local landmark and a popular stop on winter trips around the Kola Peninsula.
In summer the site looks quite plain: a metal pipe rises from the ground with a constant jet of water pouring out. Nothing supernatural, yet even then you can sense the force of nature and the unusual character of the phenomenon. Everything changes in winter, though, when the harsh climate of Murmansk Oblast turns an ordinary borehole into a fantastical natural feature.
Winter ice formation
In hard frosts a huge ice structure with a bluish tint builds up around the source. It isn't a solid block but is made up of layered ice "lamellae" that create a complex, almost otherworldly relief. Unfrozen water keeps flowing from the centre of this ice sculpture, forming a small pool even in severe sub-zero temperatures.
A popular winter destination
The Underground Geyser is especially popular with tourists who come here as part of winter tours. Reaching it on foot is difficult, especially during the snowy season, so snowmobile excursions are the usual way to get there. Such trips become part of the adventure in their own right: across snow-covered expanses, through northern landscapes and the silence of the tundra.
The site is often called one of the most photogenic spots in northern Russia. Lit up at night, the ice structure looks like a scene from a winter fairy tale, drawing photographers and fans of unusual natural sites. A visit here can also be combined with other activities, such as snowmobiling, husky sledding, skiing or rock climbing in the surrounding area.
A note on the name
It's worth noting that the name "geyser" is a loose, scientifically inaccurate label. This is in fact a self-flowing artesian borehole, and there may be several such points in the area. Even so, this particular site became the best known thanks to its striking winter appearance.
The place leaves a strong impression through its combination of northern nature, ice, water and human engineering. The air here feels especially clean, and many visitors describe the northern atmosphere as crisp and almost "edible".
And perhaps the most important rule for anyone visiting the Underground Geyser is to treat nature with care. Please don't leave litter, and help keep this unique place as clean and beautiful as nature and time made it.
