Monument to Viktor Sukhorukov

The monument to Viktor Sukhorukov stands on Lenin Street in Orekhovo-Zuevo, next to the tower with chimes, one of the city's symbols. The bronze sculpture shows the actor sitting on a bench with a bronze newspaper beside him; it was unveiled on September 9, 2016, on City Day and on the eve of Sukhorukov's 65th birthday.

How the monument came to be

The idea for the monument belonged to local businessman Igor Berkausov, whose admiration for Sukhorukov's talent grew after watching the film "Strict Regime Comedy" (1992). Learning that the actor was born in Orekhovo-Zuevo, Berkausov decided to commemorate his contribution to the city's culture, comparing Sukhorukov's significance for Orekhovo-Zuevo to that of Savva Morozov.

The sculptor was Pyotr Medvedev. A year before the monument was installed, he met with Sukhorukov to gather material for the work — particular attention was paid to the actor's bald head, for which Sukhorukov provided photographs from different angles. The sculpture was made at the D'ARTLAND workshop under the direction of Sergei Vasilyuk.

Unveiling

Sukhorukov himself attended the unveiling ceremony. He thanked the residents of his hometown and said the monument reflects not only his personality but also his life, thoughts and path.

Viktor Sukhorukov and Orekhovo-Zuevo

Viktor Ivanovich Sukhorukov was born on November 10, 1951, in Orekhovo-Zuevo — hence the choice of location for the monument. He gained nationwide fame for his roles in Alexei Balabanov's films "Brother" (1997) and "Brother 2" (2000). In 2002 he became an Honored Artist of Russia, and in 2008 a People's Artist of Russia.

In 2006 Sukhorukov was made an honorary citizen of Orekhovo-Zuevo, and ten years later, in 2016, a sculpture in his honor appeared on the city's main street — a monument the actor called a reflection of his life's path.
