Photos of Lovers' Arch (Kazan)

  • Арка влюбленных. Photo 1

Description

The Lovers' Arch is a white elliptical arch in central Kazan, on Lobachevsky Street at the entrance to Black Lake Park (Chernoye Ozero) in the Vakhitovsky district. It is known for its unusual acoustics: a whisper at one side of the vault can be heard at the other. It is one of the city's most romantic spots and a regular stop for wedding parties.

History

The arch is usually dated to the 1930s; the exact year and the architect are unknown. It was conceived as an architectural feature of the park and serves as its entrance from Lobachevsky Street, linking the park with the surrounding blocks.

The park itself lies in an old bed of the Kazanka River. Until the mid-19th century there was a chain of lakes here, the largest and cleanest of them being Black Lake, which even had fish. The lake was later drained and the grounds landscaped. Remains of an old linden alley survive, and where the lake used to be there is now a fountain basin filled with water in summer. The park was renovated in the 2010s, with a playground, exercise equipment and new paths.

Acoustics

The arch's main feature is its vault. Thanks to the elliptical shape, sound travels along the inner surface: if two people stand at opposite piers, lean towards the wall and whisper, each hears the other clearly. Visitors note that the effect only works from the right spots, and it is best tried on a quiet day.

Legends and traditions

Legends surround the arch's origin. One says its drawings were found among the papers of Nikolai Lobachevsky, the mathematician behind non-Euclidean geometry, after whom the street is named. There is no evidence for this, but the story fits well next to Kazan University, where Lobachevsky served as rector.

Whispering declarations of love under the arch is a modern city tradition. The arch is believed to strengthen relationships and bring couples together. Newlyweds walk through it, and wedding parties stop here for photo shoots.

Getting there

The arch is in the historic centre, on Lobachevsky Street at the eastern entrance to Black Lake Park. It is an easy walk from Kazan University and Freedom Square; the nearest public transport stops are Universitet and Ploshchad Svobody. The pedestrian Bauman Street is close by, so the arch fits easily into a walk around the centre.
