Description
St. George's Rock, also known as the Rock of the Holy Appearance (Ukrainian: Skela of the Holy Apparition), is an above-water rock in the form of a small island located 1.5 km east of the tip of Cape Fiolent and 140 m from the shore of Jasper Beach in the Balaklava region of Sevastopol . This is one of the main tourist spots in the Fiolent area.
Historical reference
The rock got its name thanks to the legend of St. George the Victorious. According to legend, in 891 St. George appeared at this place to Greek fishermen in distress. His icon was found on the rock, and in the same year the St. George's Monastery was founded on the coast. This monastery became an important spiritual center and is still active today.
Cross on the rock
In 1891, a white marble cross was installed on the rock. In the 1920s, the cross was removed, but on September 14, 1991, a new seven-meter metal cross, weighing 1,400 kg, was consecrated on the rock, which was installed with the support of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy. In November 2018, the metal cross was toppled by a strong storm. In July 2019, a new marble cross with a metal frame and granite base was installed on the rock. The height of the new cross is eight meters, and a two-meter depression was made in the rock for its installation.
Legend and meaning
The legend of St. George says that in 891, Greek sailors, caught in a strong storm, prayed earnestly for salvation. At this time, Saint George appeared to them in a flash of lightning and said that their lives would be saved. The sailors landed on a rock where they found the icon of St. George. In gratitude, they installed a cross at this place, which was later replaced by a marble one and, finally, a metal one.
Architecture and natural features
St. George's Rock is a genetically abrasive remnant composed of volcanic rocks. Its banks are steep and its height reaches 50 meters. The rock is an ancient, long-extinct volcano, which is confirmed by the presence of lava flows on the shore.
