Description

The temple complex in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" in Penza is a significant spiritual place with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The first wooden church building was built in 1704 by local landowner Pavel Valyaev on the site of the appearance of the Life-Giving Source icon.

In 1806, a stone chapel was erected above the holy spring, and a little higher, on the slope, through the diligence of the landowner Nikolai Savvich Pecherin, a stone Kazan Church with a bell tower was built. In 1871, a monumental five-domed cathedral in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Source” with a separate bell tower was built north of the Kazan Church.

In the 20s of the 20th century, the temple complex went through difficult times: services were stopped, the buildings were used as a grain and fertilizer warehouse, and the bell tower was demolished.

Revival of the complex

The revival of the complex began in 1995 with the opening of a prayer house, the first rector of which was Archpriest Alexy Spirin. In 1999, the chapel was restored, and in 2000, the revered icon of the Life-Giving Source was transferred from the Mitrofan Church in Penza by procession.

In 2003-2004, the Kazan Church was restored, and from 2006 to 2014, the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Source” and the bell tower were restored. On April 5, 2014, Metropolitan Seraphim consecrated the cathedral with a great ceremony. Currently, preparations are continuing for the consecration of the side chapels - in the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. book Alexander Nevsky and priest John Olenevsky.

The legend of the appearance of the icon

According to legend, at the end of the 17th century, during a raid by the Kuban people, a monk hid in the reeds under the mountain on which Valyaevka is now located, and found there the icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring”. Having safely escaped the nomads, he told about his discovery to the peasants of the neighboring village of Polyany, who then built a wooden chapel here and moved to this place, calling it Bogorodsky.

Source value

The icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" has provided healings many times, which have been documented. Before the revolution, students, especially seminarians, came to the source before and after exams. Peasants from neighboring counties came here in hundreds. Particularly revered days were Friday of Holy Week and the day of Easter. In 1915, with a large crowd of people from Penza to Valyaevka, a religious procession led by Archbishop Vladimir took place.

Current status

In 1996, a prayer house was opened in Valyaevka, and in 1999, restoration of the chapel began, completed in 2000. The restoration of the small Kazan Church began at the end of 2003, and the first bishop's liturgy was held there on April 16, 2004.
