Vityaz Rock
Description
Vityaz Rock (Скальник Витязь) is a rock outcrop on the Olkhinskoye Plateau in the Irkutsk Region, at the junction of the Slyudyansky, Shelekhovsky and Irkutsky districts. It is the most popular and accessible of the plateau's rock formations, standing about 30 to 40 meters high. The nearest landmark is the settlement of Orlyonok, from which a footpath leads across the Olkha River valley to the rocks.
History
The outcrop was named Vityaz (Knight) in the autumn of 1957, when it was found by an expedition led by Svyatoslav Fedchenko, who came here with a group of schoolchildren from the village of Bolshoy Lug. On 19 May 1981 the rock was given the status of a regional nature monument; the protected area covers 3 hectares.
Legend
Among hikers there is a popular explanation for the name: the outline of the rock face is said to resemble the face of an ancient warrior in a helmet, and this resemblance is why the outcrop was called Vityaz.
Getting there
The easiest way to reach Vityaz is by suburban train from Irkutsk to Orlyonok station. From the station it is about 8 kilometers on foot (or by bicycle) along a path marked with trail posts. The route crosses the Olkha River over a narrow footbridge, beyond which stands a map of the Olkhinskoye Plateau showing all its rock formations, and a fork where the upper and lower trails both lead to Vityaz.
Good to know
There is a tourist camp near the rock where visitors can pitch a tent or rent a gazebo with a fire pit for a small fee. Some travelers prefer to camp in the forest beyond the footbridge rather than at the camp itself. There is no mobile signal at the top of the outcrop, so the route is best planned in advance. The place attracts both hikers and rock climbers, from beginners to experienced ones.
