Sopka Partizanskaya
Description
Sopka Partizanskaya (Partisan Hill) is a hill 207 meters high in the Khabarovsky District of Khabarovsk Krai, near the village of Voronezhskoye-2 and the Partizanskiye Sopki railway stop. From the top of the hill there is a panoramic view of Khabarovsk, an unusual vantage point for the area around the city.
History
On top of the hill stands a memorial obelisk to the participants of the Russian Civil War of 1918–1922 in the Far East. During the Civil War, the "Second Tungus" partisan detachment operated in this area under the command of Alexey Kochnev, made up mostly of workers of the Amur flotilla and local residents.
The obelisk was put up by Komsomol members of the Krasnoflotsky district of Khabarovsk, in memory of fellow townspeople whose ancestors had taken part in the partisan movement. In 1967 the monument was moved to the top of the hill, where it still stands. It is this obelisk that is believed to have given the hill its unofficial name, Partizanskaya (Partisan).
What to see
The hill itself is a wooded elevation with no rock outcrops or viewing platforms apart from its summit. The Civil War memorial remains the main point of interest: a modest monument on an open site, with a view of Khabarovsk spread out below. Over the decades cracks have appeared on the obelisk, and it is in need of repair.
Getting there
Sopka Partizanskaya is located in the Khabarovsky District of Khabarovsk Krai, by the village of Voronezhskoye-2. A railway line with the Partizanskiye Sopki stop runs nearby, so the foot of the hill can be reached by a suburban train or by car along the road that follows the Amur River away from Khabarovsk.
