Description

The Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier is a memorial complex beside the M-9 "Moscow–Riga" highway, near the village of Khoroshevo in Rzhevsky District, Tver Oblast, Russia, dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in the battles near Rzhev in 1942–1943. The complex opened on 30 June 2020; its construction was initiated by veterans of the Great Patriotic War.

The central bronze sculpture is a 25-metre-high figure of a soldier, set on top of an eight-sided artificial mound 10 metres high, bringing the monument's total height to 35 metres. At the soldier's feet the figure dissolves into a flock of 35 cranes taking flight, symbolising the souls of the fallen. The sculpture was created by sculptor Andrey Korobtsov and architect Konstantin Fomin, with film director Andrei Konchalovsky as the project's overall artistic director.

Next to the figure is a 55-metre avenue — the "Shards" installation — whose zigzagging walls carry more than 17,000 names of soldiers who died in the Battle of Rzhev. The complex also has a museum and exhibition pavilion displaying artefacts from the battlefields.

The memorial was built with funds from the Union State of Russia and Belarus and public donations: the Union budget provided 200 million roubles, and the rest of the 650 million rouble total was raised from public contributions.
