Mount Sugomak
Description
Mount Sugomak, near the town of Kyshtym in Chelyabinsk Oblast, is the second-highest peak of the mountain range on the western side of Kyshtym. It rises 591 meters above sea level, next to the range's highest point, Mount Egoza, at 607 meters.
Mount Sugomak is a rocky summit covered with mixed forest and rare plants. Together with Lake Sugomak at its foot, Sugomak Cave and the neighboring Golaya Sopka (a rocky hill about 50 meters high on the lake shore), it forms a single specially protected natural complex.
Sugomak Cave is the oldest marble cave in the Southern Urals, more than 150 meters long and made up of three grottoes. Nearby is the "Mary's Tears" spring.
The name "Sugomak" is probably of Bashkir origin: there are theories linking it to the Bashkir words for "water rat" or to "sugomak" itself, as well as a suggestion that it comes from ancient Turkic male given names - none of these versions has been conclusively confirmed.
