Alikaev Rock (Maryin Utyos)
Description
Alikaev Rock, also known as Maryin Utyos (Mary's Cliff), is a natural and historical landmark on the left bank of the Sarana River, a tributary of the Ufa River, in Russia. The cliff rises more than 50 metres.
The name "Alikaev Rock" comes from the robber Alikay: according to legend, he threw himself off the cliff after his beautiful wife left him. Another version says that, hiding from the gendarmes, Alikay hid his jewels in a boat and sank it in a swamp on the opposite bank of the Sarana before disappearing without a trace.
The cliff became widely known after the 1960s film "Shadows Disappear at Noon" was shot here: a scene showing the death of partisan commander Marya Krasnaya was filmed at the rock, giving it its second name, Maryin Utyos.
Today Alikaev Rock is a popular spot for rock climbing and tourist gatherings. Local residents connect it with legends of underground passages leading to other high places nearby, including Bobylyovskaya Cave.
