Suspension Bridge over the Chapaevka

Photos of Suspension Bridge over the Chapaevka

Description

The suspension bridge over the Chapaevka River stands in the village of Yablonovy Ovrag, Volzhsky District, Samara Region, about 46 kilometers south of Samara. The pedestrian bridge links two parts of the village split by the Chapaevka and serves locals as an everyday crossing. Similar suspension bridges over the same river exist in two other villages of the same district — Podyom-Mikhaylovka and Bogdanovka — so fans of such crossings often visit all three in one trip across Samara Region.

History

Over the years the bridge has been destroyed several times by spring floods, when the Chapaevka rises well above its usual level. Destructions are known from 1988, 2011 and 2024. Each time, villagers rebuilt the crossing, and the bridge went back to serving Yablonovy Ovrag.

What it looks like now

Today it is a wooden suspension structure slung across the Chapaevka on cables. The decking visibly springs and sways underfoot, and the whole crossing sags a little over the water. Despite being this shaky, the bridge remains a working pedestrian crossing used by local residents. In recent years it has become a popular spot for photographs: pictures of the swaying wooden bridge over the Chapaevka often appear in lists of sights in Samara Region alongside similar crossings in neighboring villages.

Getting there

Yablonovy Ovrag is connected to Samara by a paved road, about 46 km from the city. There has been no regular bus service to the village since the late 2000s, so it is easier to drive there or take a taxi.

There are two useful landmarks inside the village. First: turn off the main road onto Naumova Street — the bridge will be on the left. Second: follow Sovetskaya Street to the kindergarten — the bridge is right behind it, by the water.
